Places to Visit in Mahabalipuram

Shore Temple

One of the oldest temple in South India in the lap of beautiful shore of Bay of Bengal is surely be a great scenary to tourists and the visit can energise your inner soul. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Five Rathas

These temples are constructed in monolithic period and dedicated to five pandava worriers, Dharmaraja, Bhima, Arjuna Nakul, Sahadev and their only one wife Draupadi.

Arjuna's Penance

This sculptured marvel is considered as one of the biggest open-air rock canvases in the world. Another name of this sculpture is "Arjuna's Penance". The structure made on two big boulders is attracting number of tourists.

Krishna Mandapam

This rock cut temple's wall sculptures are narrating the story of Krishna's pastoral life. One beautiful carving there is more attracting the visitors and depicts the story of lifting the Govardhan Parvat by Krishna to protect his people from Indra's wrath of the Rain.

Tiger's Cave

The little coastal village 5Km away from Mahabalipuram has a shrine dedicated to Godess Durga. The big sculpture of Durga is the main attraction here and considering this was the battle sight of Durga and Mahishasura.

Cholamadal Artist's Village

The village is established in 1965 to promote traditional art and the location is 20Km away from Chennai town, 38Km far from Mahabalipuram. Regular exhibitions held to display marvelous paintings, sculptures and handy craft items. There is also option of interacting with artists to do research and study on various fields.

Dakshina Chitra

Another village near Cholamandal village, established for same purpose in 1984. The sculptures from different locations of South India states can found here.

Kovalam

Kovalam is famous beach location 38Km away from Chennai and 15km far from Mahabalipuram. This small fishing village is a favorite location for Olive Ridley Turtles and they hatch their egg in this beach between November and March season.

Nithyakalyanaperumal Temple

One of the 108 sacred shrines in Tamilnadu and a famous Hindu pilgrimage location dedicated to Godess Lakshmi. Garuda Sevai, on the Tamil Month Aani, Pooram in Aadi, and spring festival in Vaigasi are the main occasions here and the perfect time to visit this temple. The temple is located 16Km away from Mahabalipuram.

Thirukkalukundram

This is a pilgrimage location, which is 16Km away from Mahabalipuram and it is a small Vedagirishvara Temple at the top of a 160m hill. The shrine dedicated to Shiva.
